File Manager/ Nautilus

Nautilus aka using the file browser

  • Ubuntu's file browser is called Nautilus. You can access it from the places menu in your desktop tool bar.

  • There's two places you can put files - in your personal user folder, or in the NPP shares folder on the server, where everyone can access files. Both should be visible in the sidepane of the filebrowser window.

You'll find that it's sometimes more convenient to view your files and folders as a list, and sometimes as icons.
You can toggle between views: go to the View menu, and scroll down to the bottom where you can select "View as list" or "view as icons"

here is the more familiar "icon" view:

click on the View menu, and select "View as Icons" to see each file graphically represented in Nautilus

and this is an example of the "list" view:

choose the View menu, and say "view as list" to see files and folders as a list with different fields - date modified, size, type, etc - to sort on.

The list view is very helpful because it allows you to sort your files and folders by their modification date, file name, file size, file type, or by many other categories that you can specify.

For example, to sort by modification date, click on Date Modified (or in the grey area nearby) and you'll notice a downward pointing arrow will appear, indicating you've sorted your files in ascending order. The figure below shows files sorted this way.

Click again, and you'll see an upward pointing arrow - tada, you're now sorting in descending order.  Use the same method to sort on any of the other categories.

If you're sifting through a large number of files, it might also be helpful to zoom out

The Zoom In/Zoom Out feature is located in the Views menu:

The Keyboard shortcuts the View menu suggests good to note, they can make your workflow much more efficient.
